Twenty years since the Apache nameplate first appeared in India’s motorcycle market, the RTR 160 has maintained its position as one of the most significant entries in the country’s performance segment. The 2025 model represents the most comprehensive overhaul the platform has received, arriving at a critical juncture when consumer expectations for technology and performance have reached unprecedented heights.

“We didn’t approach this as just another update cycle,” explains Karthik Vijayaraghavan, Head of Product Development at TVS Motor Company, during our trackside conversation. “The 2025 Apache RTR 160 was developed with a clear mandate – retain the raw character that Apache enthusiasts love while pushing boundaries in terms of technology, efficiency, and performance metrics.”

This philosophy becomes immediately apparent when examining the motorcycle in detail. While unmistakably an Apache in profile, the 2025 model features sharper, more contemporary styling cues that give it a distinctive visual signature. The characteristic “predator face” front end has evolved with a more aggressive LED headlamp assembly incorporating angular DRLs that double as sequential turn indicators – a first in the segment. The tank shrouds and side panels feature more pronounced creases, enhancing the motorcycle’s muscular stance while improving aerodynamics.

Beneath the refreshed aesthetics lies a substantially reworked 159.7cc single-cylinder engine. The powerband feels noticeably broader, with usable power available from just above idle to the redline. TVS claims the engine utilizes a new combustion chamber design and lighter internals that reduce reciprocating mass by approximately 11% compared to its predecessor.

“We’ve worked extensively on reducing internal friction,” notes Vijayaraghavan. “The engine now features a diamond-like carbon coating on the piston pins and a redesigned oil pump that improves lubrication efficiency while reducing parasitic losses.”

These incremental improvements translate to tangible benefits on the road. The engine revs more freely throughout the range, and the infamous vibrations that plagued earlier Apache generations at higher rpms have been largely tamed. A notable improvement is the revised 5-speed gearbox, which now offers smoother shifts with a shorter throw between gears.

Fuel efficiency, still a critical consideration for Indian buyers regardless of segment, has improved by approximately 7% according to company claims. During our limited testing, the motorcycle returned approximately a genuine 48-52 kmpl under mixed riding conditions – impressive considering its performance-oriented character.

The Apache RTR 160’s handling has always been its defining characteristic, and TVS has wisely avoided radical alterations to this aspect. Braking performance sees significant enhancement with the introduction of a larger 282mm front disc (up from 270mm) coupled with a radial caliper. The rear retains a 220mm disc, and all variants now come standard with dual-channel ABS featuring a supermoto mode that allows the rear wheel to be locked for advanced riders – another segment-first feature that underscores the Apache’s performance credentials.

This balance appears well-struck. During our testing, the electronics remained unobtrusive until needed, allowing the motorcycle’s inherent character to shine through. The display is legible even under direct sunlight, and the user interface is intuitive enough to navigate while wearing gloves.

Additional technological enhancements include a USB-C charging port, keyless ignition, and LED lighting throughout. Higher variants feature self-canceling turn indicators and a hazard lamp function – practical additions that enhance everyday usability.

While the Apache RTR 160 has always positioned itself as a performance-oriented motorcycle, TVS recognizes that most owners use it primarily as a daily commuter. Ground clearance has been increased marginally to 185mm, allowing the motorcycle to negotiate rough surfaces with greater confidence – an important consideration given India’s varied road conditions. The kerb weight has been maintained at approximately 147kg despite the addition of new features, preserving the motorcycle’s nimble handling characteristics.

The 2025 Apache RTR 160 will be available in three variants: Base, R, and RR. The base variant offers essential features at an accessible price point, while the R adds the TFT display, ride modes, and adjustable suspension. TVS has aggressively priced the range between ₹1.25 lakh for the base variant and ₹1.45 lakh for the RR (ex-showroom), representing strong value considering the comprehensive feature set. This positioning places it in direct competition with the Bajaj Pulsar NS160, Yamaha FZ-S, and Honda X-Blade, though the Apache offers the most extensive technological package among its peers.

Color options include the traditional Racing Red and Gloss Black, joined by three new shades: Stealth Grey, Metallic Blue, and a striking Pearl White that incorporates reflective graphics for enhanced visibility at night.
